NORFOLK & PORTSMOUTH BAR ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION
2020 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Dear Graduating Senior:
The attorney members of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation are pleased to announce the 2020 Scholarship Essay Contest. We appreciate your interest and hope that you will find the exploration of our chosen topic to be rewarding and thought provoking.
The Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation’s mission is to promote the
administration of justice, to educate the public about the importance of law in their daily lives, and to enhance the image of the legal profession in our local community. We believe that assisting local students bear the burden of their first year of college expenses provides an excellent opportunity for our organization. We welcome the opportunity to serve our community by giving back to those persons who will hopefully return to the area, becoming leaders and outstanding citizens of Hampton Roads. Your plans to work or not to work in the legal field have no bearing on the selection of the winners of the scholarships being offered.
Two scholarships, one in the amount of $3,000 and another in the amount of $2,000, will be awarded to deserving students at the NPBA’s annual meeting normally held in May (May 14th this year). I hope you will review the enclosed materials and choose to submit an application. Enclosed is a description of the essay topic and a Scholarship Application. The awarding of this year’s scholarships will be based in part upon your essay and in part by other factors such as financial need, grades, school activities, and extracurricular activities including those outside school. Your plan or lack of a plan to go into the legal or law enforcement fields has no bearing on the award of the
scholarships. Please return your completed Essay and Application (with attached documents; see instructions on the Application) to us by 5 pm on Thursday, March 5, 2020. It is very important, IN FACT IMPERATIVE, that applications be submitted on time and be complete when submitted, including a number where you may be easily contacted. INCOMPLETE OR LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Please read the application carefully and please follow all instructions.
Should you have any questions regarding our scholarship program, please feel free to contact the Scholarship Chairperson, Robert H. Powell III, Esq. at 624-3245 or firstname.lastname@example.org. We wish you continued success in all of your endeavors.
