Course Title: Introduction to the Virginia Sexually Violent Predators Act

Summary: 

This will be an introduction to the sexually violent predator civil commitment process. Attendees will learn the statutory framework of the Act, how an individual may qualify for such a process, the procedures the Commonwealth must follow, and ultimately how the matter is litigated from both.

Jennifer Gebler:

  • Criminal and Traffic Defense: Knowing clients experience a tremendous amount of fear and uncertainty when charged with a crime, Ms. Gebler prioritizes communication with her clients. She guides them through each stage of their defense and ensures they are fully informed when making decisions about their case. Ms. Gebler represents clients on all types of traffic infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies in the courts of Hampton Roads. As an experienced trial attorney with proven results, she is ready to guide you through the process of preparing your case for trial.
  • Juvenile Defense: Ms. Gebler has a passion for juvenile justice and works tirelessly to make sure her juvenile clients are protected from the significant, and possibly life-long, consequences of being charged with an offense as a juvenile. She also understands the very serious risks that juveniles may face, such as being tried as an adult while still a juvenile. Ms. Gebler represents clients in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts throughout Hampton Roads.
  • Federal Criminal Defense: In addition to state court practice, Ms. Gebler represents clients charged with offenses in federal court. Though they can take years to build, once in Court, federal cases move quickly. It is important to hire someone who understands the distinctions between state and federal court practice, and who will communicate with you throughout the process.
  • Restoration of Firearm Rights: If you have been convicted of a felony or been involuntarily committed, it is possible to restore your right to bear arms. The process involves petitioning the appropriate Virginia court, and it often requires a hearing. Ms. Gebler knows the ins-and-outs of the firearm restoration process and the hurdles that must be overcome to be successful.

Brock R. Maust, Esq.:

Brock is a Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General for Virginia.  Brock has been with the Sexually Violent Predator Civil Commitment ("SVP") Section since April 2017.  Prior to joining the SVP Section, Brock served as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney in Newport News, Virginia, assigned to the violent crimes unit, from 2007 until 2017 when he left to accept his current position.  Brock graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in Political Science.  Thereafter, he graduated from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University.
